Best of the Central West, NSW

The Farmer’s Hut, Wilga Station

Already planning an escape from the city to help you recover from the silly season? But also not that keen to leave your creature comforts (i.e. delicious coffee, fine food, good plonk, solid phone reception and wi-fi)?

Bathurst and Mudgee are only a few hours by car from Sydney and will fit the bill.

Here's a handful of our favourite places to stay and a few insiders tips for while you're there.

The Farmer’s Hut

Bathurst, NSW

Completely off-grid and self-contained, The Farmer's Hut at Wilga Station is perfect for couples or singles wanting a quiet getaway.

We doubt that you'll want to leave the views from the window seat, or the complimentary antipasto platter and local wine...but if you do want to get active there are options on your doorstep or down the road. There is a walking trail at the Station, and also a spot for a dip if you need to cool off afterwards.

Or explore the nearby Bathurst backroads with a trip to the nearby Rockley Pub for a delicious pub lunch - 30 minutes drive from Bathurst.

Wilga Station also offers the stunning Shearer's Hall if you are in a larger group, or the Wool Store in Bathurst if you want to be downtown not off-grid.

Yarras Homestead

Bathurst, NSW

Invite your favourites or your family to stay in one of the five bedrooms (sleeps 10) at this historic farm stay (est. 1823).

Head into Bathurst, which is 10 minutes drive, and pick up some supplies at the local Farmer's Market (held on the fourth Saturday of each month). There is also a local brewery, winery or distillery to choose from.

Slightly further afield is Mayfield Garden and 65 hectares of glorious private garden to explore...Or you could just sit on the verandah and relax, and watch the farm at work.

Evamor Valley

Mudgee, NSW

Evamor Valley is the perfect spot (5 minutes to town and wineries) for a weekend in the country while being close to Mudgee and its creature comforts....delicious coffee, great shopping and restaurants.

There are six luxury eco-tents at Evamor Valley to choose from, all fitted with private hot tubs, a private deck and fire pit. This is definitely glamping, with soft linen, throws and king-sized beds.

If you can't get away until later next year pencil in September and 'Flavours of Mudgee' in your calendar. The main streets of Mudgee become a sea of stalls offering delicious food, drink and wares from local providores.

Belle Bois

Rylstone, NSW

Belle Bois is a luxury, hosted getaway....a home away from home that is unique and welcoming.

You will be treated to two course breakfasts, and also a French Mediterranean style table d'hote dinner (cooked with local produce). There is plenty of fresh air and room to move, here on the doorstep of the world's widest canyon - the Capertee Valley.

Down the road is the village of Rylstone where you can check out the Sunday morning community markets or try 29 nine 99, a fave for Chinese yum cha and tea.

More Good Bits…

Wilga Station - When you book a stay at Wilga Station you can also arrange a personal farm tour with owner Hamish (3rd generation farmer.)  He is also a great cook and will cook up a storm down by the creek on request!

Yarras Homestead - Is a great base for the Bathurst Winter festival which is held in July every year. No need to head to the snow for your fix - try ice skating in the town centre.

Evamor Valley - Has a 25% off* sale at the moment. Find out more details at their website - sale ends 12 December 2024. (*T&Cs apply.)

Belle Bois - Step outside after dinner and wait for your eyes to adjust. Look up. To see the sky full of stars and the sweep of the Milky Way.
